Heritage Language Initiative (HLI)

The HLI seeks to address the needs of speakers of languages other than English in our communities and to build on the strengths that come from bilingualism. The “heritage” language is often the language spoken at home, other than English. The HLI offers a wide range of classes in a number of Heritage languages. At this picturesque location, PSU students spend the morning assisting in a variety of projects and activities in rural schools while the afternoons are spent studying Spanish and classes in Guatemalan history and culture in small groups with local teachers and experts. This program confers a total of 8 credits: 4 credits of Span 404 - Cooperative Education and 4 credits of Span. 399 - Spanish Language Immersion. Enrollment in both Span 404 and Span 399 is required.
