Dr. Basci received her BA and MA from Ege University in Izmir, Turkey, and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas in Austin (1995). She is a recipient of various awards including a Fulbright scholarship for doctoral work. She taught at Ankara University, Faculty of Letters, and at the University of Texas-Austin before her appointment at PSU in 1997. Dr. Basci has publications on Turkish language instruction and on women and gender in contemporary Turkish culture and literature. Her recent works include "Women of Turkey in American Missionary Texts," in, Deconstructing Images of "The Turkish Woman", ed. Since 1999, she has been serving as the editor of the AATT Bulletin, a publication of the American Association of Teachers of Turkic Languages. She is also the co-designer of the "Turkish Proficiency Assessment Tool," a computer-based proficiency test developed as part of the STAMP project of the Center for Applied Second Language Studies at the University of Oregon. She teaches courses on first- through third- year modern standard Turkish, modern Turkish literature, popular culture in Turkey, and women in the Middle East.
