Sandra Freels has taught Russian language, literature, and cultural history at Portland
State since 1979. She is the author of three textbooks: Focus on Russian (1991, 1996),
The Golden Age (1996), and Russian in Use (2007). Chair of the Department of Foreign
Languages and Literatures since 2000, Dr. Freels also directs the PSU Russian Language
Flagship Partner Program. Dr. Freels is the recipient of PSU’s George Hoffman award for
excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service (1999) and of the college of Liberal
Arts and Science’s John Elliot Allen award for excellence in teaching (2003).
