Dr.
Wetzel received her Ph.D. in Japanese linguistics from Cornell University.
She specializes in the linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics and linguistic
pragmatics of Japanese, particularly modern honorific language or keigo.
Her publications include Keigo in Modern Japan
(University of Hawaii Press, 2004), and various articles that have appeared
in Language in Society, Language Variation and Change, Multilingua
, and elsewhere. Her secondary research interests are Japanese language
pedagogy and Heritage Language. She is the past president of the Association
of Teachers of Japanese. She has also served as the coordinating editor
of the Journal of the Association of Teachers of Japanese, as well as
book review editor for the Journal of Asian Studies . She directs the
first- and second-year language program at PSU, and teaches courses in
Japanese linguistics and language pedagogy.
