Jackie Gross, a graduate student in German has been accepted into the Ph.D. Program in Germanic Studies at the University of Minnesota and was awarded a TA-ship as well as a full scholarship. Congratulations, Jackie!

William B. Fischer, German and Mary Bastiani of Portland Public Schools, have received a $50,000 No Child Left Behind - University/School Partnership grant. The funds will support training K-12 in-service teachers and PSU FLL graduate students in adjusting teaching techniques and materials to varying learning styles, with follow-up outcomes research and design of a new course at PSU.

Dr. Jennifer Perlmutter, Foreign Languages and Literatures faculty, published a review of Michael S. Koppisch’s book Rivalry and the Disruption of Order in Molière’s Theater in the February 2006 issue of The French Review.

Timm Menke presented a paper entitled "Family History as Social History: The Novels of Gerhard Henschel"  at the conference "Culture of Memory in East and West Germany" at the Gesamteuropäische Studienwerk, Vlotho, Germany, in July 2005.

Timm Menke has been appointed "External Examiner" for courses in the German and European Studies Department at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Congratulations to Bill Fischer for winning one of the two 2005 PSU Prizes for Teaching and learning with Technology. This year's award was given for work with GER 399 "German Science Fiction," where students produced a radio drama, and GER 320 "German for Professional Use," which is a business simulation that is well on its way to being a real company. The prize of $500 will be awarded at the PSU Teaching and Learning with Technology Fair on 3 May, at which both courses and Bill's other technology work will be exhibited. The prize money will be used as seed money for the GER 320 students to use as the startup capital to get our company, SpeakEasy™, onto its feet.
