Turkish student
Trevor Cox has been awarded this year's Redhouse Prize for
best progress in Turkish language. This is a US national award granted to four students
(two from the east and two from the west coast) annually. The award is administered by
the Redhouse prize committee operating under the rubric of the American Association of
Teachers of Turkic Languages. The award will be presented during the business meeting of the Turkish Studies Association at the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) conference to take place this year in Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Kazem Tehrani, Portland State University, and Dr. Diane Tehrani, Clark College, Presented a paper entitled "Poetry reading: An Iranian Contribution to the Community" at Bridging Cultures: Constructing Experiences of Iranians Living Abroad at Indiana University on Oct. 21.

Dr. Anousha Sedighi, Foreign Languages and Literatures faculty, presented a
paper titled "Impersonal Constructions in Persian: How impersonal are they?" at
the Sixth Biennial Conference on Iranian Studies, held at SOAS, University of
London, Aug 5.

Anousha Sedighi, Assistant Professor in Persian has worked with Persia House to
create a scholarship for Persian language study for the coming academic year.
Applicants are accepted from any undergraduate or graduate student pursuing
Persian language studies at PSU. Congratulations Dr. Sedighi!"

"Complex Predicates and Psychological Verbs in Persian" at the Eleventh
Biennial Linguistics Symposium: Intertheoretical Approaches to Complex Verb
Constructions, Rice University, Houston, March 2005.

Dirgham Sbait, Foreign Languages and Literatures faculty, produced, professionally recorded, and published a CD titled, The Standard Fus-ha Arabic Language, to accompany his previously published work The Standard Fus-ha Arabic Language: Textbook for Beginners (summer 2005).

Dr. Pelin Basci, presented "The Rise, Fall, and the Taming of the 'New Muslim Woman': Changing Perceptions of Masculinity in Turkish Novel and the Popular Press, 1900-1930", September 16, 2004 at Indiana University-Bloomington in their Department of Central Eurasian Studies, Ottoman and Modern Turkish Studies.

Pelin Basci, Foreign Languages and Literatures faculty, authored "Advertising Modernity in Women's World: Women's Lifestyle and Leisure in Late-Ottoman Istanbul" published in HAWWA, Journal of Women of the Middle East and the Islamic World, Vol. 2, No. 1 (2004).

Congratulations to Pelin Basci, whose article "Love, Marriage, and Motherhood: Changing Expectations of Women in Late Ottoman Istanbul" was published in the Autumn addition of Turkish Studies. You can find it in Vol. 4, No. 3 (Autumn 2003): pgs. 145-177.

Dr. Dirgham Sbait is the 2003 recipient of the prestigous George Hoffman Award for Faculty Excellence. He will receive the award and monetary prize at Spring Commencement.

Dr. Dirgham's Sbait has published a significant article on titled "Palestinian Wedding Songs" in vol. 6 of The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music: The Middle East.

Each year during the interviews to determine the John Eliot Allen Outstanding professor for each department Scott Burns also asks students to identify the best professor they have had at PSU outside of the major. In 2000 students outside of FLL identified Dirgham Sbait.
