Introduction to elementary Swahili. Emphasis on listening
comprehension and oral practice, the elements of grammar, vocabulary
building, and elementary readings.
SWAH 201, 202, 203 - Second Year Swahili (4, 4, 4)
Intensive review of basic materials introduced in first-year program
and further development of communication skills. Recommended
prerequisite: SWAH 103.
FL 399 - Directed study in Swahili language and literature (4)
Advanced reading materials, poetry writing and reading, literary criticism of books written in Swahili, discourse analysis of Swahili texts. Prerequisite: SWAH 303 or 203
FL 399 - Internship in East Africa (4)
This course requires students to travel and live in East Africa for three months. Students are assigned internships depending on their areas of interest. This program may require students to learn another East African Language depending on where they will be posted. Prerequisite: SWAH 203 or 303
FLL 399 - HIV/AIDS Training workshop internship (12)
This course requires students to travel and live in East Africa for three months. Students attend workshops locally on training others on issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention. Students then travel to East Africa and assist in a training workshop. Prerequisite: SWAH 203 or 303

FL 399 Topics in East African Cultures (African folktales) (4)
(Offered Fall term)
This class primarily focuses on reading and telling stories. Students will read Nelson Mandela’s Favorite African Folktales. Students will then re-tell the stories in class without reading them directly from the book.
FL 399 Topics in East African Cultures (Swahili traditions vs. Modernity) (4)
(Offered Winter term)
This class will study East African Culture through Swahili culture. Each week students will research and present different cultural components.
FL 399 Topics in East African Cultures (East African Biographies) (4)
(Offered Spring term)
This class will study East African short stories. The seminar will focus on literary styles and techniques, morality and character development, and history, geography and culture. Students will study and research a particular biography and do a presentation in class. Biographies include:
