What is your favorite class to teach?

If I had to pick a favorite, I think I'd say Swahili 101 (Elementary Swahili). For me the joy of teaching this course stems from new students who are curious to learn a new language but who at the same time question the language. “Why do we have to say it like this and not like this?” I enjoy having new students, learning their needs and working along with them. I would also say that the Third Year Swahili course fulfills my desire to see learners speak fluent Swahili and end up doing something in Africa.

What do you like best about your job?

The thing I like most about my job is when we learn something new, something that nobody has realized before. For me the best part of the teaching is the relationships and interactions with the students. Teaching would be no fun without the students! I have kept in touch with some students for years after the course. It's always rewarding to see people learn and apply what they've learned.

What is your greatest achievement professionally?

One of my third year students did an internship in Kenya last summer. She recently got a job there. That is my greatest achievement so far.

What is your greatest achievement personally?

<< long pause >> It's something I don't really think about. I'm proud to work at PSU. This is a great achievement for me.

What reason should students choose to come to PSU?

PSU is the only college in the Northwest that offers a full Swahili program.
